Productivity isn’t something that comes naturally to most of us. If we’re being honest most of us would be happy campers if someone would do everything for us. Unfortunately that’s just not how life works and we need to get work done. To put it in simply, the only way to succeed is to be productive. We’ve put together a list of 17 ways to help you improve your productivity.

  1. Prioritize your tasks. Know what needs to be done and list the important things first.
  2. Plan everything. Know when you’re most productive (probably in the morning) and get the most difficult tasks done then.
  3. Make a checklist of all the tasks you need to complete. Set deadlines for completing each task and tick off everything you complete. Also make sure you track and limit the time you spend on tasks.
  4. Make the most of your commute. If you use public transport or are driven to work use commuting time to reply to emails or write your to do list.
  5. Put similar tasks into a single batch. This will help you get to them quicker.
  6. Quit multitasking. This may come as a shock to some (especially since rumor has it that women a multi task gurus). Psychologists found that trying to do multiple tasks at once actually leads to lost time.
  7. Follow the two minute rule. According Steve Olenski if you see a task or action you can do in two minutes or less do it immediately. This also helps with procrastination.
  8. Minimize meetings. Sometimes you just have to say no to meetings that can be a call or an email. If you have to have a meeting then try to have standing meetings, they tend to keep people on point.
  9. Be proactive not reactive. Don’t let emails and calls dictate how your day progresses.
  10. Work in 90 intervals. Don’t sit in one place for hours on end, take breaks. Studies also showed that top performers work for not more 4.5 hours.
  11. Minimize distractions as much as possible. Set office hours, keep your door closed, put earphones on if you have to. This leads to the next point.
  12. GET OFF SOCIAL MEDIA. This had to be caps. We’re unfortunately addicted to social media and putting your phone down needs to be a conscience decision.
  13. Give yourself something nice to look at. Having good office aesthetics really helps boost your mood and in turn your productivity. Also keep your desk and office clean and tidy.
  14. Give up on chasing perfection. You’re not perfect and no one expects you to be.
  15. Outsource and delegate as much as you can.
  16. Listen to music to lift your spirits and increase productivity.
  17. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have to work long hours to be productive. You really only need to work smart not hard.
